The Mummies - Death By Unga Bunga!! [2004]

Existen bandas que es imposible no amarlas, The Mummies es una de ellas.
Dentro del garage, no conozco a nadie que no le gusten, su sonido sucio, distorsionado, salvaje, agresivo y primitivo, combinado con su vestimenta de momias (al estilo Hollywood porque las momias de verdad no son así) los convirtieron en un grupo emblemático del género.

Estos originarios de California, tenían un especial amor por el rock & roll cincuentero y por bandas vanguardistas como Devo, así que a finales de los 80 decidieron hacer su propia banda.
Ninguno de ellos sabía tocar a la perfección su instrumento musical pero lo que les sobraba era actitud.
Son los más claros ejemplos del budget rock, es decir, todo lo hacen ellos mismos (DIY) y están en contra de todo lo que implica ser un rockstar. En sus conciertos era común que agredieran verbalmente al público y eran partidarios del vinil, durante mucho tiempo estuvieron en contra del CD. La imagen de Truant Ruane aporreando su teclado ya es legendaria.
Durante todos los años que estuvieron juntos, todos sus LP's y sencillos sólo se lanzaron en vinil con portadas bastante sencillas y a blanco y negro.

Un grupo con estas características no podía vivir mucho tiempo así que en 1994 se separaron de forma definitiva. Fue hasta el 2008 que se reunieron para un concierto en su natal California y para la edición de ese año del Funtastic en España, en donde fueron la banda estelar. Después de eso, la banda ha dado unos cuantos conciertos en Europa y en Estados Unidos, simplemente para divertirse y nada más. No hay planes de una reunión permanente, siempre han sido congruente en su pensar y su actuar.

Pero en el 2004, la Estrus Records lanzó este recopilatorio de la banda y contrario a lo que durante mucho tiempo predicaron, fue lanzado en CD. De forma sarcástica, en la contraportada se lee la frase FUCK VINYL.
Todavía más difícil de creer es que yo lo haya encontrado nuevo en una tienda de discos.

Hace unos días publiqué los 9 volúmenes de la saga Fuzz Face, recopilatorios creados por Jolete Macana y que contienen lo mejor del garage y punk mundial.
Pero apenas me enteré, gracias al buen camarada César Alcapone que el volumen 5 incluía un CD de regalo para los primeros que lo adquirieran.
Este CD está dedicado al garage instrumental de todo el mundo y en caso de que lo sigan dudando, es una joya al igual que todos los anteriores.
A lo largo de las 18 canciones que lo conforman jamás se escucha una voz humana, aquí todos se comunican mediante sus instrumentos ¡y de que forma!
Indispensable sin duda.
